 Searching [Konan]
« Thread Started on Mar 15, 2008, 9:01pm »

The main reason the Uchiha found himself straying back into the god-forsaken and awfully tempestuous country was simply the fact that Itachi realized he was a bit of a danger to himself. The scars of his past had marred his mind enough so that he was becoming volatile in wants; the previous need for some kind of stimulation had endangered him greatly. Adrenaline didn’t work when it came to battle or straying upon enemy territory; it was a nuisance, the now subdued man noted… So, he found himself skulking back over the border of Hi no Kuni into the thickets of the forests leading into Amegakure no Sato. It was for the best, no matter how much storms depressed him—more so than usual, that was. They were ominous and indications of dire things to come; not to mention the pall of clouds that concealed the sky blotted out any light. As juvenile as it seemed, he was, in a sense, uneasy in the dark; the darkness of blindness was impending and inevitable. He dreaded the day when it would come, so in the meantime, he needed the slightest of reassurances in this empty world that he could see the light. No such luck befell him; of course, he only got what he deserved. The dark figure, clad in black with a few shocks of red, pushed absently through the brambles and foliage that lined the expanse of the humid forest.

Already, the rain was beginning to lightly fall. It seeped through the colander that was the leaves overhead, dripping occasionally down to the ground below, or on Itachi to intermingle with the light streams of blood on his cheeks. The strain was growing unbearable; the Genjutsu and numerous Amaterasu attacks he had used not too long before had pushed his optical nerves to the limit. The new agitation sent the occasional fleck of blood down his face from his eyes, now a black hue, and scleras reddened. The sting never ceased, and it was irksome to have to dab his eyes and bloody the black fabric of his cloak occasionally. But it was his own uncharacteristic rashness that had instigated the pain; it was his fault, as was everything else… All of it had drained him somewhat, and his mind was weighed down in his own sullenness, though his thoughts were oddly calm in the random pessimisms that flitted through his psyche. He knew several things. One, he needed to accomplish his goal. Sasuke’s eyes were absolutely essential, lest the haziness over his eyes snowball into total blindness. A medic, secondly, would be beneficial, even to numb this pain. Three, if he were to even make it to motivate himself to attain the pinnacle of his power, he needed some sort of excitement, any purpose to keep going. He occasionally entertained the notion of suicide, but it would show far too much cowardice. So, he endured. Half against his will…

The raven-haired male didn’t quite know exactly how long he had been meandering through the dense flora, but he was rather intrepid. It would not be the first time he had been lost. However, as the minutes dragged on and the forest thinned, with rain spattering lightly upon the cobblestone pathways—and more gallingly, upon him—it became obvious he had at least made the right choice in trajectories. His dark hair was laden with water, as the rain became to fall from the dismal skies upon, and it plastered his long bangs against his pale face. It was horribly uncomfortable, but at least he had made it to the ‘headquarters’ of sorts of his organization. The village of nukenin created mixed feelings; he was welcomed—or at least tolerated—in the Akatsuki-dominated town. But, the criminal life it fostered was sometimes too lewd for his more aristocratic tastes. He digressed. For now, he tried not to dwell on the negative thoughts that so plagued him and simply wandered upon the thoroughfare. His dark eyes were half lidded, weighed down with sleep deprivation. The droplets of water clung to his lashes to conceal his brooding expression, and the blood that marred his face was washed away slightly in the rain, creating the slightest streams of red-tinted water down his skin. Itachi briefly considered the odds of running into someone he was familiar with, but he shrugged it off, as he crossed his arms over his chest to subconsciously ward of the cold setting into the wet materials of his robes. Halfheartedly, he hoped to contract a sickness… Damnable depression.

The pleasant promenades that Konan took each day (when it didn’t rain or if it didn’t rain, should I add) were quite comforting. Both her mentality and feet would carry her into the distance for minutes as she walked around Amegakure no Sato, waiting for something interesting to happen. Her brain would begin to empty of most thoughts as she advanced forward with each small step, her feet conveying her to no specific location. Her footsteps could be heard as she moved about, the splatter of her blue sandals hitting upon the rain puddles sounding softly throughout the area. Her cloak also took impact on these puddles and grew a ring of water around the bottom of the black robe, which was embroidered with many red clouds to signify the meaning of the name of her organization: Daybreak.

The wind blew helping the cold atmosphere grow even colder, her green eyes looking upward towards the darkened storm clouds that were leisurely rolling in. She enjoyed the rain - watching it, at least - but it was something that wasn’t of any guidance to her. If Pain needed her at any point, it would be best if her skin was not soaked. The only fast way for Konan to obtain paper for her jutsu was to manipulate it from her skin. If her skin was soaked, the paper that was dispersed would be useless, and so would she. Konan had the option of taking shelter in any of the nearby buildings, but did not want to earn any attention that she got from the residents of Amegakure. The only other selection was to hide in the forests and not get soaked quite as much as she would in the open.

And so, she made her way towards the forests that surrounded the village as the light drizzle had begun. The sky was crying. Was Amegakure always sad? Was that the reason for the seemingly never-ending rains? As she made her way into the wooded area, she watches as the raindrops trickled on the leaves of the forest upon hitting them and noted how some leaves were not lucky enough to obtain the drink of rain as it fell. She sighed, her eyes studying the dense forest, her blue hair staying in tact despite the wind. She felt a familiar presence near. Who was it - more importantly - who wasn’t it?

Konan sighed, looking upward; searching for the nearby human. This human was not a traitor, but rather a companion: or at least an acquaintance who had done no known harm to her: from that she was sure. She saw blurr of a familiarized color of raven hair, and another blur of red and black. Because it was so dark out, Konan could not see clearly. She couldn't make out anything. However, as she walked towards the sulky figure, she noticed the same red clouds that sat on her own cloak, and came up with a single conclusion: it was the Uchiha kid.

Feeling the need to speak up, Konan opened her mouth, and closed it abruptly, as if she were trying to figure out as to what she should say. With her calm, yet emotionless voice, Konan began. "Itachi," a pause. "What brings you here?" She stood underneath a tree, studying his depressive nature.

The buildings that were in the vicinity were too difficult to see, with the curtain of translucent rain spattering down upon the ground, creating a soft veil around the objects it could not permeate through. In addition, the blood that pooled in the back of his eyes was troubling; he could see even less than normal. Itachi supposed he best take his rest, lest he collapse from chakra exhaustion—as he had not slept for days, as per usual—with his ultimate defense rendered useless. It was not the most desirable of locations; he’d surely become sick. And, should anyone stumble upon him, he was feeling more drowned each passing second but decided that it bothered him little. He had little choice, anyway, so he leaned himself up against the trunk of a tree, pressed as close to the bark as he was physically allowed in hopes to conceal himself more from the storm raging above. The wind still managed to pierce through his provisional shelter, and much to his chagrin, the humanness in him reacted; he found himself shivering. It was just until the rain slowed, that he would remain here, vulnerable… And, for once, he was alone. His eyes slid closed only to flutter slightly open as another chakra source nearby faintly alerted him to a more tense state. In this area, he would not allow his hubris to be his downfall. However, after some consideration, he realized this energy was familiar, and it put him somewhat at an ease.

The Uchiha mulled over things—Konan. That was who it was. Pein’s loyal assistant—his angel. Inwardly, he scoffed, but it was none of his concern what the pair deemed themselves. He was numb at the moment; a meeting with his superior of sorts didn’t much bother him. At least it was company that wasn’t hostile, so he waited patiently, his eyes vigilant as he strained them to see through the sodden air. After a few moments, a form became apparent to him. And though squinting concentrated some of the remaining blood to the surface of his eyes to seep out somewhat, he found his hypothesis worth proving correct. The blue-haired kunoichi was nothing to be feared, so far as he knew. He folded his hands and rested them against his stomach and crossed one foot over the other from his leaning position to give off the mien of nonchalance. He watched through critical eyes as she approached and rested against a tree opposite him. For a few seconds, his intense black gaze burned unwaveringly into her. He knew little of her; therefore, knew not how to behave—or instigate some sort of interaction. Thankfully, she did however terse this conversation was sure to be. He raised his eyes fully to hers as she said his name, calmly waiting for her to finish. “Konan,” he greeted liltingly in his almost inaudible monotone. He seemed to consider her question for a few moments. “A purpose,” he offered softly, leaning his head back to observe the rain through the canopy of leaves. “And someplace to rest.”

Itachi fought back the shivers that tried to wrack down his spine; he refused to show weakness in front of someone, especially a woman of her stature. His red-tinted and bleary vision was trained in on her without qualms of openly staring. However old she was, she was perpetually young, it seemed; the creases of emotion never showed on people such as themselves. He dwelled not on this. “Walk with me,” he requested. His velvet tone had the faintest touches of domineering steel behind it. It was probably not the best of ideas to give orders to those above him, but it mattered not to him. The worst she could do was deny him. He cursed the mortality that became more prominent in his more haggard state. The depression was eating away at him inwardly, and he craved human companionship subconsciously—any sort of distraction. And, for now, his comrade was his only option to turn to. Spryly, despite the heaviness in his limbs that would only noticeably seem to slow him to one who was always around him, he pushed off from the tree on which he leaned. The Uchiha took a few strides forward before turning to face her, expectantly resting his intense eyes on the paper-wielder.

The Sharingan user didn’t think she’d have any hesitation in doing something as simple as following, despite how vague he had been. He’d disclose information to her or prove his innocent intentions, only if she asked. Perhaps he’d even question her; she seemed to fair better than he. A long sigh passed his slightly parted lips; he needed to feel… Anything.

"Konan,"

His greeting was pleasant, despite his never changing tone. This was a voice that the lone female of the Akatsuki had ever heard before. The only interaction they had had prior to that of the present was a while back - if she could remember clearly - and was in the River Country, in their currently destroyed fissure, where they would extract the tailed beast from their owners. She had some idea of who he was on the outside, but as for his characteristic of personality; well, that was a different story. The morphed voice in the cavern on those days a year or so ago made him seem like he was slightly vain and quite the anti-social: preferring to only talk when he felt the need to do so - just as herself. However, what went on in the young man’s mind was no business to hers.

“A purpose,” said he. Konan’s lips twitched slightly. Obviously: a purpose. Her lip stopped twitching. How sarcastic of him… Deciding to make sure her eyes didn't show any sign of emotion, the kunoichi looked downward once more, trying not to let this sentence bother her. After all, again, it was none of her business what was going on in his mind. Slowly, she lifted her green eyes off from brown soil on the ground, meeting the Sharingan in the Uchiha’s eyes. Surely, she did know of his Sharingan, but to meet the Mangekyou doujutsu once again was a strange experience for her: especially after the disappearance of Madara. “And some place to rest.” He was sure to include.

She folded her hands together, her index and middle fingers clinging together as tightly as they could, the other fingers refusing to make contact with one another. Wrapped around her pallid finger was a ring, bright and red. Engraved within the jewel of the ring was a symbol - kanji, more specifically. The kanji was black, and had the meaning of haku or byaku - which in our language, English, means ‘white’. The reason for each member receiving these rings were unknown: and the meaning behind why each member got which ring what they got were unknown as well.

“Walk with me.” requested he, and had begun walking forth. He stopped a few feet from his prior location, and turned to face her - it was as if he were expecting her to follow. Konan decided that she had no choice but to follow him. The rain was harder now; something that the female had not noticed during her small conversation. Luckily, the shelter underneath the tree branch allowed the woman the woman to keep dry enough - not as well as she would‘ve inside; but again, she didn‘t want the attention or be troubled by people she didn‘t know well.

And so, Konan followed, wondering where they would be going. Her strides her slow, and continued to be so until she met with the Uchiha. She refused to discuss this manner any. Her face continued to look forward until tilting it slightly, where she would correspond - yet again - with Itachi‘s eyes.

Itachi simply studied the woman, who was silent through his few words. And, even afterwards; he was inquisitive momentarily, but decided she was one who had little to offer in conversations. It was just as well. But, his keen eyes, when reading body language, detected the faintest of movements on her face. His own lips turned downward into the smallest of frowns, and he eyed her dubiously. “Do you doubt me?” he asked softly, curious as to whether or not she thought he was sardonic. But, he spoke only the truth; he had no reason to lie to the woman beside him. A purpose… How foreign it sounded. Something to keep him going, something to strive for, other than for the morbidity of taking his own younger sibling’s eyes for his own sake. “Something other than inner deadness,” he mused, to expound on his two words that she seemed to doubt. “Have you knowledge?” His tone was a deadpan, as usual, with his silky tenor trailing off wistfully. He confided such minute details to her, only because she was someone who did not wish to see him lifeless and in pain. And, she was quiet enough not to judge on his warped thoughts. However, this was the most normal desire he possessed; he wanted some sort of emotion. And danger did not give it to him, it seemed. His eyes shifted as hers did, until he could no longer follow her gaze. The motion made him wince slightly, however. It was something he knew she could see, as she looked up once more. He closed his eyes with a sigh, to let the prized Sharingan fade from his eyes, to give them some rest.

His eyes remained closed as he thought, the sleep he so needed but could not have weighing them down. After a few moments of silence on both their parts, he arduously lifted his pupil-less gaze to study the face of the enigmatic woman across him. She was unreadable in her seeming emotionless façade, but he decided it didn’t bother him all that much. She knew not of him, and he not of her; they could remain in the sort of relationship where they were total strangers. It was simply the voicing of his occasional, troubled thoughts and having the physical presence of someone that was reassuring. He would speak when he felt necessary, even if she was not particularly listening. It mattered not. At least she had chosen to oblige him in his sort of demand, and he remained still until she roused herself and began to walk towards him, into the rain that was pouring just outside the meager cover the trees possessed. The water fell in salvos, biting at his skin through the material of his cloak. The raven-haired Uchiha waited until she was walking in sync with him; another form of support, in his moment of mental and physical weakness. Hunger was something that didn’t bother him, but it sapped his strength; lack of sleep contributed to it also. And now, with his immune system weakened in this storm, it would be somewhat of a miracle for him to remain well in health. He didn’t bother to suppress his chills as he painstakingly walked, eyes lowered to the ground as the water splashed up to soak the bottom hem of his cloak.

His stark face turned up for a moment, so that his tired eyes could examine Konan once more, and he found she met his gaze. “Forgive me,” Itachi requested gently, though he was somewhat insincere. He had whisked her off without her knowledge of where he was headed. “I need the company… Perhaps it will offer me something else, in terms of emotion or sensation…” His voice was a mumble, still deadened in tone. The rain masked most of the volume he was able to muster to speak, but he supposed she’d be able to hear, with how he walked so close to her. Inwardly, he bade himself not to stumble; it would be most awkward. It would only be a few more minutes before he could pinpoint someplace where they could remain indoors; perhaps an inn—where he doubted she’d follow—or a sort of restaurant where they could at least have tea. He questioned her ability to feel compassion, so he knew not how long she would be accompanying him on his meaningless wandering. He pulled the long, black hair from his face that clung to his pale skin near his eyes. Through his obscured vision, he could see the silhouettes of buildings become clearer.

“Do you doubt me?” he had asked, faintly.

Her reaction to this question did not seem to show, and she closed her eyes, revealing the dark, navy blue eye shadow that rested on her eyelids. Finally, the young woman opened her mouth, and softly, she began. “Itachi,” mumbled she, eyes still closed. “I’m sorry… People should not be judged from first appearance. It takes quite a while to understand someone clearly.” Those two sentences could be used in the world for a long time: and could be ignored for quite a long time as well.

“So, if we both understand correctly, my answer is a simple no.” If anything, it was she who did not want to sound stupid: she, after all - was the second-in-command in the Akatsuki; and to sound stupid was to mentally demote her place. Not only that, but she was quite fond of Itachi so far. He was good company. She assumed that if she made a mistake and did sound idiotic, Itachi would become more distant than what he was already. It was not a good way for teammates to interact.

A clarification arose. “Something other than inner deadness, have you knowledge?”

Konan’s eyelids lifted, revealing her eyes which glanced forward. She did not reply to this with a drone of her voice, but instead chose to nod slowly. "Inner deadness is something our lives necessitate in order to be complete. It could last for only a few seconds - sometimes a few years.” For some strange reason, the Akatsuki member was being fairly talkative, despite her usual silence; it was not like it, but she certainly did not want to give Itachi the impression that she did not care. “Are you one of those people who have encountered it for quite a while now…?"

The rain sounded throughout the woodland, thrusting itself downward. Konan took a deep breath, listening to the man as he continued further. “Forgive me. I need the company… Perhaps it will offer me something else, in terms of emotion or sensation…”

Offering him a disguised, nearly unnoticeable curl of the lips, she nodded. "Should we go find shelter then, and rest? Perhaps that would enlighten you the slightest?" The whole goal of her walk was to avoid the citizens of Amegakure, but he did happen to look a tad exhausted; not only that, but something seemed to be bothering him as well.

Itachi continued quietly down the pathways; he was somewhat stiff, always somewhat wary of those he was not around often. But, Konan seemed to radiate no mal intent towards him. He was comfortable enough to keep his eyes down, without his Sharingan. He had the courtesy to look up as he was addressed by his teammate of sorts, and as she began to speak, a look of skepticism crossed his face. Never had he been spoken to as if he were a human being with some sort of comprehension of feeling. Well, not anytime in the past seven years. A pause ensued; his dark eyes, still filled with the years of strain, stared off into nothingness. And, he supposed he deserved his bad reputation in a way; he did not understand fully the empathy. “You are forgiven,” he replied lightly, in a way that suggested there was nothing to be sorry for in the first place. The words were unusual on his tongue; his hesitation in it was witness enough to that. No one had ever apologized to him for anything for him to have experience in saying such a thing. But, he pushed past it, but his eyes were intent upon her profile while her eyes were closed. He still was drawn around himself tightly; shelter would be imperative soon, as he could feel the soreness in his throat already and the incessant chills creeping along his skin. The raven-haired male listened placidly as she spoke; his face remained seamless. Despite his mild perplexity, he did not let it show. And while he would have liked to thank her, he simply did not say such things. So a dismissive ‘hn’ was the only thing he had to offer.

However, his attention was drawn back to the Akatsuki woman as she opened her eyes and nodded; an action he was able to perceive from the corner of his eyes. It stirred some sort of curiosity in him, and silently, he found himself wondering if she could provide some sort of textbook answer for him. Her answer was not something he entirely wanted to hear; pain surely could not be necessary… He let out a long, unreadable sigh with a distant look in his eyes. Despite the fact she gave no clue on how he was to move past his inward suffering, he was slightly confused—and silently grateful—that she actually seemed to care. “I suppose you could say that,” he replied, the most wistful of half smiles twitching upon the corners of his lips. However, it didn’t last long, and the touch of some sort of emotion on his drawn face flickered away quickly. His sleep-deprived eyes slid downwards to examine absently the water droplets rising up from the pavement with each step they took. A few moments of silence passed in the darkness, and he was at ease with the surprising lack of palpable tension. He was relaxed, for once, in the presence of another, and he languidly turned his dark eyes to her once more. “And you?” There was the slightest hint of a curious undertone in his silky voice; his head tilted lightly to the side. He wondered if this little walk could be symbiotic for the two of them.

The smile that suddenly graced her lips took him off his guard for a hot second; he was unused to such an expression in his presence. But, he composed himself into the frigid façade that always adorned his patrician features. “Yes. That is for the best,” Itachi replied gently. His speech was clipped, but he was trying his best to force some note of false geniality into his speech. He should have been grateful for the company, but he just couldn’t bring himself to feel too much of anything at the moment. His gaze examined the village of Amegakure as it drew nearer still; they were beginning to pass through an area where a few shops lined the sodden streets. He glanced about, unable to read the signs with his vision. He sighed, clearly agitated. “Choose where you would like to go, please,” he requested quietly, looking down, as if ashamed. But, she probably wouldn’t know too much of his weakness. He hoped she knew someplace nearby; his strength was sapping from him quickly. The faint tremors still rocked his body as he walked.

Konan followed Itachi’s lead; her stride was no longer in tact with his, and hers was soother, not as quick-paced as it had been before: it was much slower, her the collosion between her sandals and puddles no longer creating particles from underneath her feet to jump up, soaking the bottom of her cloak as well as her sandals and toes. As he had accepted her apology, she nodded slowly, her head rolling up to the sky - or, what she could see of it. “Thank you.” Her manner of speech was continuing to decline to show any form of sentimental value. Undulating her head, her eyes came to face with the Uchiha’s back in which only his drenched hair and sodden cloak was visible to her. A monotone syllable was release from his mouth, and she looked down, wondering what was on his mind. She ran to catch up with him, splashing a mess of water all over her clothes, but alas, she did not mind.

As she managed to fall next to him again, she caught a glimpse of a somewhat twisted grin on his usually blank face - not the villainous ones in the movies or anything; but rather a half-smile - from the corner of her eyes. It was quite emotional, and something the woman had least expected to see from him: if anyone. It disappeared, quickly though, and the woman was left to make no comment. Instead, she only simply replied to his question: which was originally her own, but he was returning it. “…Somewhat.” There was slight hesitation in her voice, considering as if it were true to him. A somewhat was the fairest answer she could have given: it wasn’t lying. She didn’t know honestly how he really meant by ‘inner deadness’, and all the woman was left to do was to assume.

The small smile that appeared to show faded, her mouth structure returning to it’s usual frown; the ends of the corner of her mouth pointing downward as if she were upset or angered by something. Although at that moment, she couldn’t quite say that she was. He had agreed with her suggestion on to rest somewhere, but Konan seemed to assume that he was quite unfamiliar with the area, and thus had suggested that she would pick the location. Now, Konan could sit there for minutes trying to figure out where to go within her mind, but quickly, from his sleepy condition, she opened her mouth, and began to speak.

“A restaurant would be fine - unless you’d prefer something different…?” Her voice trailed off, the chirping and chipper-ing of birds was slowly beginning to pick up: signifying that the rain would sure be soon to slow down.

Itachi, in his distractedly troubled state, hardly seemed to notice as the blue-haired woman fell out of pace with him; he could hardly hear her soft footsteps, as the constant, galling splash of water was no longer hitting him from her side. As focus came back to him, he wondered if he was so lost in his own brooding thoughts that she had slipped away without his notice. That was quite the annoying thought, and he turned his head slightly, only to see her a small way back, her eyes on his back. He frowned and cast a quizzical expression from his profile before turning once more. He chose to disregard her phrase of thanks; he could infer it was somewhat empty on her lips as well. Again, it was unnecessary for her to say such things to him. But, the human frailties within marveled at and craved the courteousness that was so long deprived of him. He was almost relieved when he was able to distinguish her footsteps falling in the puddles upon the ground in contrast to the even cadence of the rainfall. Should he collapse from the exhaustion that gripped him so, he had no idea what would happen. His will had been broken years prior; he was running on a sort of empty. Despite the water that was kicked up around them, he walked closer to its sorts; he was wavering on the point of just needing to rest. And, his pride would not allow him to stumble without some sort of grace. Someone to take down with him or to catch himself on would ease the sting of his pride. He just hoped his dependency on the proximity was not overly noticeable; his face was ever blank, however, and gave away none of his qualms.

The Uchiha noted the silence between them for several moments, but it was not the uncomfortable kind or the still tenseness he was so accustomed to. It was not entirely unpleasant, but he still could not read her expression fully. His fleeting one was not common, and he was grateful she made no remark. However, his eyes slid closed and he assumed a pensive look on his calm features. Her hesitant answer was somewhat confusing to him; he had been vague… He did not entirely comprehend what was so enigmatic about what he said at times, but he was terse. “You say so,” he replied quietly, as if to assure her that there was not entirely a wrong answer. He didn’t speak for a few moments; he simply sighed. “The absence of emotion,” the young man mused aloud, somewhat to expound. “It is a curse.” He had initially planned to ask her a question, yet he knew it would not fit to press her so randomly for a motive she did not know of. So, he trailed off there with the statement to himself and focused his eyes elsewhere. “As is the rain…” The words were mumbled and nearly inaudible; even he did not understand the unusual, chronic omen to him. With another light frown, he closed his eyes and turned his head upward slightly, long hair shifting slightly out of his face; he allowed the water to stream down his cheeks. It was habitual by this point; it was always nice in some ways to feel his weaknesses—how he was stung by the droplets and how he was physically cold, other than just mentally…

He watched, with his own mild discontent, as her facial expression took a more sullen turn as well. Was the entire world filled with misery? The rain seemed to witness to that; the sky mourned. But, he knew little of her and her emotional range… Itachi inwardly held to the notion another’s company would lighten his brooding and negative thoughts, even somewhat. And, better yet, an emotion or any sort of feeling… There was something present now; something that kept him talking. But, of course, it was still of more dark content, as he was the one who initiated the dialogue. It bothered him somewhat that he was unfamiliar with everything, but he decided not to dwell on it. She provided some distraction by speaking, and he relented without complaint or hesitation. “I have no place else to go,” the dark-eyed male murmured, again with the slightest of wistful tones in his melodic voice. “Preferably close,” he voiced, after a moment’s thought. He composed himself into a haughty façade, to hide the irk he displayed at his current condition. It was futile to hide his haggardness in itself, so he settled for masking the fact it bothered him. He fell back a few absent paces, far less smooth than he would have liked, to stand a few inches behind her to show he was no longer leading their path.
